Straight and triplet MIDI grids reshape the groove

A straight eighth-note grid divides each quarter-note beat into two equal parts, while eighth-note triplets divide it into three. Those placements are rhythmically different even when both appear inside 4/4.

The visible piano-roll grid and quantize operation are separate, since changing the display helps editing but does not necessarily move existing notes. Quantization moves note starts, note ends, or both toward the selected positions.

Grid resolution decides valid targets, with 1/8 handling broad placements while 1/16 and 1/32 expose progressively smaller divisions. Choosing the finest option by default can preserve mistakes near unintended lines instead of clarifying the rhythm.

Straight and triplet grids encode different subdivisions​

Straight grids divide time through repeated halves, producing two placements per beat at eighths, four at sixteenths, and eight at thirty-seconds. Each finer value adds binary positions without creating triplet locations.

Triplet grids divide time into multiples of three, giving three eighth-note triplets or six sixteenth-note triplets per quarter-note beat. Moving a triplet figure onto straight sixteenths changes its spacing rather than tightening it.

Triplet timing differs from swing because a triplet grid offers equal divisions while swing delays selected offbeat positions by a chosen amount. Some swing settings approach triplet-like long-short timing, but the controls describe different operations.

Do not substitute a very fine straight grid for a missing triplet grid. The nearest binary line may look close at one zoom level, yet repeated notes accumulate uneven spacing against the beat. Use a real tuplet target or enter events by tick position, then verify every group from downbeat to downbeat.

Choose the grid from the phrase you intend to hear, not from the time signature alone. A 4/4 passage can contain straight notes, triplets, or both, and switching to a triplet grid does not turn it into a different meter. Check where the notes fall against each quarter-note beat.

Mixed timing needs selective correction​

Mixed quantization recognizes both straight and tuplet targets within one performance. It helps when a phrase deliberately combines straight sixteenths with triplet figures, but it cannot reliably infer careless playing. The source still needs clear enough placement for each note to approach its intended target.

When mixed quantization is unavailable, split the selection and correct straight notes before applying a matching value to the triplet passage. Processing the entire clip twice risks moving already-correct notes toward the wrong targets.

Treat each musical role according to its rhythmic job. A kick and snare can remain straight while a tom fill uses triplets, but one mixed setting may move stable notes unnecessarily. Preserve the stable layer, correct the ornamental layer, and listen for doubled attacks where they meet.

This is where mixed straight-and-triplet timing benefits from adjustable rhythmic generation controls before MIDI reaches the arrangement. Audition each timing mode over the same tempo, preserve the convincing candidate, and export only after the intended subdivision is clear.

Quantize note starts separately from note lengths when articulation matters. Moving an onset can repair placement while leaving a held chord, short stab, or legato line intact. Snapping both ends may make the rhythm neater but silently replace deliberate durations.

Free timing protects intention only when intention exists​

Free timing leaves notes at their recorded or generated positions instead of forcing them onto a musical grid. That preserves rubato, pushes, delays, and imperfect attacks, but freedom alone does not create a groove. Unrelated timing errors remain unrelated.

Look for repeated deviation before calling a performance human. Consistently late offbeats or a recurring push before the downbeat can form a recognizable feel. Notes drifting early and late without a pattern usually need correction, even if their randomness sounds less mechanical at first.

Partial quantization offers a controlled middle position. Moving notes only part of the distance toward the grid can tighten unstable playing while retaining consistent offsets. Apply it after choosing the correct straight or triplet target, since reduced strength cannot repair the wrong subdivision.

Do not judge timing from the grid lines alone. Imported MIDI may look misplaced because the editor is displaying straight divisions over valid triplet events, and changing the view can reveal their actual organization. Listen at project tempo before dragging notes into visual alignment.

Test exported MIDI in a fresh track with quantization disabled. Confirm that downbeats stay fixed, triplet figures retain equal spacing, and mixed passages do not acquire extra flams at their boundaries. If the new track differs, inspect note starts, note ends, and import settings separately.
