Bobi Wine paid tribute to media star Clare Choppa at her Monday burial service. The politician told mourners that Choppa helped launch his music career across Western Uganda. He said the late radio host believed in him when he was just another struggling artist trying to make it big. Choppa gave him the break he needed to become famous nationwide. Wine credited her kindness for changing his entire life path.
The future president met Choppa back in December 2001 at Radio West station. Wine had traveled to Rwebikoona with other musicians hoping to promote their songs on air. He arrived at the station around 11pm but the manager had already gone home for the night. Wine decided to sleep on a bench in the reception area until morning. He woke up around 6am when Choppa arrived wearing a white jacket.
Wine expected to meet a male manager but found Choppa instead. He handed over his CD containing the track Akagoma Ka Lubendela after introducing himself. Choppa listened to the music and liked what she heard from the unknown artist. She asked Wine if he had other versions of the song available. Three weeks later Wine heard his music playing on Radio West during her popular program.
That radio breakthrough opened doors for Wine across the region. Choppa recommended him for a paid performance opportunity worth 100,000 shillings in early 2002. Wine said he would have performed for free but Choppa insisted he deserved payment. Her brother revealed that Choppa planned to join Wine's political party before her death.
