Strymon crafts pedal that mimics tape echo and valve warmth

Strymon has created a fresh guitar pedal named the EC-1 that combines classic tape delay sounds with rich valve preamp tones. The company based this device on its famous El Capistan pedal algorithm and took design cues from various models of the legendary Echoplex units. Inside, musicians will find a high-quality Class-A JFET preamp that handles both input channels separately for true stereo effects.

Players can choose between two different preamp sounds on the EC-1. The first option mimics an Echoplex EP-2 with an extra-high-frequency response that works great with humbucker pickups. The second choice delivers smoother, warmer tones based on a modified EP-2 that Strymon engineers studied during development. The main dTape control creates realistic tape echo effects by modeling the physical head movement, tape condition, bias settings, and mechanical quirks.

A special toggle switch marked Rec Level lets users select Low, Med, or High signal strength to control how much saturation occurs in the simulated tape circuit. Additional knobs labeled Repeats, Tape Age, and Mechanics help guitarists adjust delay time, simulate older recording tape, and add wow and flutter effects. The pedal connects through USB-C or an optional EXP/MIDI adapter cable for extensive digital control capabilities.

The EC-1 can save up to 300 different sound settings that musicians access through Program Change messages. Every parameter responds to CC control signals, and the delay timing can lock to external MIDI Clock inputs. Standard quarter-inch TRS jacks provide stereo inputs and outputs for flexible setup options. This professional effects unit needs 250mA from a standard 9V DC power supply. Guitarists can purchase the EC-1 right away for £279.99, including VAT.
