Sunyani Technical University welcomed 4,222 new students during a colorful ceremony at their main auditorium. This represents 62.3% of all students who received acceptance letters. Compared to last year, enrollment jumped 25.6% from the previous 3,362 students. The gender breakdown shows 2,756 males (65.3%) and 1,466 females (34.7%) among the newcomers.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah shared details during the 29th matriculation event. He explained that 111 students (2.6%) enrolled in Master's programs, 3,681 students (87.2%) chose Bachelor's degrees, and 430 students (10.2%) selected Higher National Diploma or other Diploma tracks. Looking at fields of study, 2,724 students (64.5%) picked Science, Technology, Engineering, and TVET Programs, compared to 1,498 students (35.5%) who entered Business and Administration programs.
Professor Adinkrah-Appiah mentioned that they successfully met the national target ratio of 60/40 between STEM and Humanities programs at Technical Universities. He credited the enrollment boost to several factors, including strong graduate job placement, better program marketing through social media and radio, and attractive new degree options. He emphasized the need for continued recruitment efforts to increase student numbers across all programs, helping produce skilled graduates ready for employment or entrepreneurship to reduce youth unemployment.
The University currently offers 91 fully accredited academic programs, including 13 Master's degrees, 30 Bachelor's programs, 23 higher national diplomas, 5 Diplomas, and 20 Non-Tertiary TVET programs. The Vice-Chancellor encouraged both local and international prospective students to enroll in these industry-focused programs to gain essential knowledge, technical abilities, professional skills, and entrepreneurial capabilities for career success.
Professor Adinkrah-Appiah announced the full implementation of the New Conditions of Service for university staff who retire. The University Council approved an End-of-Service Benefit Policy last September. Under this plan, every retiring staff member receives one month of basic salary for each year served, starting from September 2021. Although some earlier payments were delayed, the University has begun paying benefits to qualified staff, beginning with 2022 retirees.
Sixteen staff members who retired in 2022 received their End-of-Service Benefits during the ceremony. Many university officials attended, including Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Justice Solomon Korantwi-Barimah, Finance Director Mr. Thomas Kwarfo, Deputy Registrars Mr. Job Manu and Mr. Stephen Yeboah, plus various Deans, Department Heads, and Members of the Convocation.
