Sudan blocks WhatsApp calls nationwide, citing security threats and public interest

Sudan's Telecommunications and Postal Regulatory Authority blocked WhatsApp voice and video calling nationwide starting July 25, 2025. Officials cited security concerns and national interest protection as primary reasons for the indefinite ban. The restriction affects millions of users who relied on the platform for communication. Sudan joins multiple nations that have limited similar services. The authority issued the announcement as a precautionary security measure.

Several countries maintain comparable restrictions on WhatsApp calling features. The United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, and Iran enforce partial or complete bans on these services. China blocks WhatsApp entirely through its internet censorship system. Regional applications like WeChat dominate markets where WhatsApp faces limitations. These nations prioritize domestic communication platforms over international alternatives.

Virtual Private Network applications allow Sudanese users to bypass the current restrictions. VPN technology creates encrypted connections that mask user locations and protect data transmission. Users can access blocked content through these secure network tunnels. Popular WhatsApp alternatives in Sudan include Botim and Viber messaging services. Many residents have adopted these platforms as primary communication tools.
