Sunil Lahri recalls barefoot agony filming Ramayan

Sunil Lahri, who played Lakshman in the old Ramayan show, posted on Instagram about filming the kevat boat scene in brutal 50-degree heat. Director Ramanand Sagar made the cast walk barefoot across scorching sand, and when they asked to wear shoes, he shot them down. Their feet got wrecked, and they could barely put footwear back on afterward.

The Doordarshan series became a massive cultural thing back in the day, with entire streets clearing out on Sunday mornings when it aired. Arun Govil as Ram and Deepika Chikhalia as Sita basically became synonymous with the actual deities for viewers. The straightforward production style and reverent pacing made the epic accessible across different age groups and regions throughout India.
