Suparn Verma calls Charlie Chaplin’s Tramp political

Filmmaker Suparn Verma has described Charlie Chaplin's Tramp as cinema's most politically charged character while discussing his forthcoming movie Haq. Speaking at a Mumbai hotel in the Juhu neighborhood, Verma explained that politics infiltrates all artistic expression regardless of creator intentions, though he emphasized his definition extends beyond governmental affairs.

Verma noted that power dynamics create political dimensions across all storytelling genres. He pointed to Chaplin's work as demonstrating class divisions between wealthy and impoverished populations, while comedic bullies represent power struggles. Even family-oriented narratives contain political elements through adult-child relationships, he argued. The director stressed these dynamics constitute fundamental aspects of existence rather than inherently negative forces.

Regarding artistic motivation, Verma suggested creators seek lasting remembrance through their work. He compared artistic output to sensory triggers like fragrances and melodies that function as temporal transport devices. Human nature drives people toward leaving permanent marks despite inevitable erosion, he said. The film arrives in theaters on Thursday, November 7.
