Supreme Court Drags Ajudua Back To Cell

The Supreme Court ordered Lagos socialite Fred Ajudua back to prison before his fraud trial resumes. Judges canceled his bail Friday because the Court of Appeal made a mistake. They ruled that the appeal court had no power to free him after finding his legal papers defective. Justice Nwosu-Iheme said the original decision refusing bail must stand.

The case will return to the same Lagos judge for a fast trial. Ajudua faces charges from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission about a $1 million scam. He allegedly tricked a Palestinian businessman out of money through pretenses. The victim, Ziad Abu Zalaf, ran a German company called Technical International.

Prosecutors claim Ajudua worked with Joseph Ochunor to forge Central Bank documents. They showed these fake papers to make their scheme look real. Ajudua asked for bail, claiming health problems, but the trial judge refused. The appeal court later granted bail, but the Supreme Court reversed that decision.
