Surat's gold Ghari sells for Rs 14,000 per kg this year

Surat's traditional Ghari sweet has evolved beyond its 1838 origins as an energy boost for freedom fighters. The delicacy gained fame after Devshankar Shukla served it to Tatya Tope and his soldiers following the 1857 rebellion. The sweet remains central to Sharad Purnima celebrations each year.

Modern variations now fetch premium prices in the market. Gold-infused Ghari sells for Rs 14,000 per kilogram, while silver and Kunafa versions cost Rs 2,500 per kilogram. Biscoop Ghari retails at Rs 1,800 per kilogram. The sweet generates Rs 5 million in annual sales from customers in the USA, Australia, Bahrain, Dubai, the UK, and Canada.

The delicacy combines mewa, almonds, pistachios, saffron, cardamom, and pure ghee. Sharad Purnima falls on Monday when devotees traditionally prepare kheer under moonlight to absorb divine blessings.
