Sushila Karki becomes Nepal PM, gives a million rupees to protest families

Nepal gained a new interim Prime Minister when Sushila Karki assumed leadership responsibilities on Sunday. The former Chief Justice honored protest fatalities by granting them martyr status and authorized one million rupees compensation for each bereaved family. President Ramchandra Paudel administered her oath on Friday after mounting pressure from Gen Z demonstrators. Karki established her headquarters at the Home Ministry facility after Tuesday's fire damaged the traditional Prime Minister's complex. Her administration committed to free medical care for 134 wounded protesters and 57 injured law enforcement officers.

Recent violence claimed 72 lives during widespread civil unrest across the nation. The casualties comprised 59 demonstrators, 10 prisoners, and three police personnel, according to media sources. Karki recommended dissolving the lower legislative chamber on Friday evening, fulfilling a central demand from youth activists. Eight parliamentary parties condemned this action as unconstitutional and contrary to Supreme Court precedents. House of Representatives elections will proceed as planned for March 5 next year despite ongoing political tensions.
