Sushila Karki's plea fails, 14 buried alive in Ilam

At least 14 people died after landslides buried three houses on Saturday night in Nepal's Ilam district, where heavy rains have fallen since Friday. Chief District Officer Sunita Nepal told reporters the death toll could increase as more damaged structures are assessed throughout the border region near India's Darjeeling. The Mechi Highway remains blocked at multiple points, and authorities have suspended long-distance transport across five of seven provinces. Rainfall decreased by Sunday morning in most areas, but meteorologists warned of potential heavy downpours in eastern Koshi Province's mountainous regions.

The government banned vehicle movement to or from Kathmandu Valley as landslides obstructed major highways connecting the capital to western Nepal, southeastern districts, and the Chinese border. District officials requested damage reports from local governments while rescue teams worked to reach affected communities. Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki urged citizens to remain indoors and avoid nonessential travel in a televised address on Saturday evening. The administration pledged to deploy all available resources to protect residents as flooding and infrastructure damage continued across multiple regions.
