A cop shot someone despite being off duty for another case. Detective Farai Simudzirai claimed his manager put him back on patrol. He killed Shadreck Madzore near Rutenga last March, though he stood accused of stabbing fellow officer Privilege Hove outside a club last year.
Police Chief Stephen Mutamba started looking into how Simudzirai carried a rifle during suspension. The detective lost his active status last July but somehow returned to work. Judge Helena Charewa questioned how a lower-ranked officer could override orders from higher up.
The court refused bail for Simudzirai. He broke prior release terms after the first murder charge. Officials worried he might pressure other police who live at his camp not to testify against him. Simudzirai reportedly shot Madzore during a car chase after hearing about a highway robbery. He fired multiple times at a Mazda truck that kept going for 35 kilometers until reaching a checkpoint. Madzore died at the hospital.
