Suzuki torches Padres as Cubs' wild streak rolls

Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki homered during Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series against San Diego at Wrigley Field. The fifth-inning solo shot tied the contest at 1-1 and extended his streak to six home runs across five games. Suzuki became the first player to homer in a postseason opener after entering with four consecutive regular-season games with home runs.

The achievement places him alongside Mike Schmidt, George Brett and Ryan Howard as the only players to reach the playoffs with such streaks. Suzuki finished the regular season with 32 home runs, a career high for the Japanese import. Cubs starter Matthew Boyd faced Padres pitcher Nick Pivetta as Chicago looked to advance past the opening round. The team swept St. Louis in their final regular-season series before hosting the wild card matchup.
