Switch 2 Struggles with Unreal Engine 5 Firepower

The next Nintendo system will work with Unreal Engine 5 but might struggle to run all its fancy features simultaneously. Tech experts at Digital Foundry say the new console probably cannot handle Nanite, Lumen, and Virtual Shadow Maps together, even at 30 frames per second with lower picture quality. They note that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X already have trouble with these combined features, and the Nintendo hardware will face bigger challenges.

Games can still use these features on the new Nintendo machine, just not all at once. Fortnite serves as a good example of what to expect since it runs at 60 frames per second without the demanding Lumen lighting feature. Tests with The Matrix Awakens demo on similar hardware showed poor performance with Lumen active, making it likely developers will cut this feature or Virtual Shadow Maps to keep games running smoothly.

Despite these limits, the new Nintendo handles Cyberpunk 2077 pretty well. Players might see better results as game makers learn to use the system more effectively. Everyone can try the console when it launches on June 5.
