T&T won't be a base for action against Venezuela

Trinidad and Tobago will not permit its territory to serve as a launching point for military operations targeting Venezuela, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has declared. Her statement responds to criticism from former Prime Minister Keith Rowley, who questioned the government's position amid heightened regional tensions involving American forces.

Persad-Bissessar clarified that a Status of Forces Agreement signed with Washington under the previous administration permits joint training exercises but excludes offensive actions against Caracas. She emphasized that no American requests for staging attacks have been received and insisted her administration places national interests above alignment with any external power or regional bloc.

The prime minister reaffirmed her government's commitment to maintaining peaceful relations with Venezuelans while supporting democratic electoral processes, adding that citizens and infrastructure face no danger because the nation refuses to participate in aggressive actions.
