Table Mountain gets helicopters, rangers, and drones for holiday safety

SANParks is doing its whole song and dance for the holidays, deploying helicopters and extra rangers at Table Mountain National Park because they know it’s gonna be a mess. The acting CEO, Property Mokoena, even did a two-day photo op in late December to check on this festive readiness plan, flying around in a chopper with police and honorary rangers to look at trails. The basic idea is that visible patrols might deter some of the inevitable problems that come with huge crowds.

This performative security push follows a reported near twenty percent jump in visitors, with over 1.7 million entries in a recent six-month period. The corpspeak about enhanced strategies and collaboration is a direct response to prior crime data and public concern about hot spots on the mountain. Their solution involves a mix of aerial monitoring, more bodies in uniform, and even some car guards they’re calling custodians, all to paper over the cracks of systemic safety issues.

The whole operation reeks of seasonal crisis management, a temporary flex of resources that will vanish once the holiday tourists leave. It underscores how the park’s massive popularity is constantly straining against its security infrastructure, requiring these dramatic, short-term displays just to maintain a facade of control. The message is clear: visit at your own risk, but maybe there will be a helicopter nearby to watch whatever happens.
