Tagwirei’s rise sparks controversy in ZANU-PF succession battle

The political ascent of businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei within ZANU-PF has generated significant internal debate and controversy. Co-opted to the party's Central Committee, Tagwirei has drawn attention for his lavish donations of vehicles to various party branches, actions critics label as vote-buying ahead of the party's 2027 congress.

This rise has reportedly created tension, with figures including Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa having previously accused him of attempting to purchase political influence. While his supporters frame the donations as legitimate resource mobilization, many party members are said to believe Tagwirei is being imposed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

His increasing prominence occurs amidst internal succession debates, including discussions about extending Mnangagwa's tenure. Tagwirei's lack of a military background also raises questions about a past military pledge to only salute leaders with liberation war credentials. His political inexperience and public statements have meanwhile caused discomfort among the general public and opposition figures.
