Tanga taps green cash, 24-hour water flow almost here

They're using a green bond to try to fix the water problems. Phase Three of the Water Services Improvement Project in Tanga is a 53.12 billion shilling effort funded by Tanzania's first water infrastructure green bond. The Tanga Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority is implementing the project, aiming for completion by March 2026. It focuses on climate resilience for the Zigi River source and expanding supply from the Mabayani Dam. Engineer Salim Hamis Ngumbi said the work is forty-five percent done and will boost daily water production from 42,000 to 72,000 cubic meters.

A major new 35,000-cubic-meter storage tank is being built to handle power outages. Combined with an existing tank, total storage will hit 45,000 cubic meters, making it the second largest in the country after a facility in Kahama. The goal is to provide a continuous water supply for up to eleven months annually, moving from emergency management to long-term security for a full twenty-four-hour service.
