A massive power grid expansion is targeting thousands of villages across Tanzania. The Rural Energy Agency signed thirty deals worth over a trillion shillings to wire up nine thousand villages. Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi directed tight supervision, ensuring schools and clinics get connected. He stated the government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan views energy as vital for national development.
Most contracts went to domestic firms, covering fifty thousand hamlets. Ndejembi warned contractors against delays or shoddy work, threatening to terminate agreements. He urged them to include all residents, even those with unfinished wiring. An initial group of two hundred sixty thousand customers should gain access first.
Current figures show rural electricity access exceeding seventy-eight percent. Connection rates for actual customers sit at thirty-seven percent. Ministry Permanent Secretary Engineer Felchesmi Mramba noted ongoing progress, with most hamlets now having access.
The project spans twenty-five regions with specific allocations. Tanga targets five hundred twenty-seven hamlets, Tabora six hundred sixty, and Songwe one hundred seventy-three. Singida gets three hundred seventy-six, Simiyu four hundred fifteen, and Shinyanga five hundred eighty-one.
Further regions include Ruvuma, Rukwa, Pwani, Njombe, and Mwanza. Mtwara, Morogoro, Mbeya, Mara, and Manyara are also covered. Lindi, Kilimanjaro, Kigoma, Katavi, Kagera, Iringa, Geita, Dodoma, and Arusha complete the list, each with set hamlet counts and budgets.
