Tanzania is finally building a massive training facility in Arusha where people can learn to cut and polish gemstones instead of shipping raw rocks overseas. The minerals minister showed up at the Tanzania Gemological Centre construction site and told contractors to throw more workers at the project and run longer shifts because President Samia Suluhu Hassan wants this thing done right and fast.
The complex will have two eight-story towers that cost around 33 billion shillings, and it is supposed to train way more students than the current setup allows. The government is banking on keeping more money inside the country by processing stones locally instead of letting other nations grab all the value-added profits.
Officials are calling it one of the biggest public investments in the region's mining industry, and they think it will turn Arusha into an even bigger gemstone hub while creating jobs for young traders.
