Tanzania presses Exim Bank to finish the 28 towns water project

Tanzania is pressuring foreign bankers to finally finish a massive infrastructure loan deal. The state wants Exim Bank of India to hustle on the Strategic 28 Towns Project worth 1.6 trillion shillings. Acting Permanent Secretary Dianna Kimario demanded adherence to existing contracts during a meeting at Ministry offices in Mtumba, Dodoma.

Officials claim only 55 percent of the work is actually done currently. Tanzania put up 400 billion shillings, while the Indian lender provided a concessional loan of 1.18 trillion. This massive delay impacts over 5.9 million citizens waiting for results.

Kimario insists work must start on the Tinde–Shelui Water Project Phase Two before June 2026. This operation costs around 6.9 billion using leftover cash from the Tabora–Igunga–Nzega initiative. It involves laying pipes to help 180,000 residents in Tinde and neighboring villages access clean supplies.

Contractors need to grind continuously to meet schedules. The Ministry of Water wants timely fund disbursement to fix the slow progress in certain areas. They refuse to let this drag on while locals face shortages.
