A major political figure finally visited a war memorial after years abroad. BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman paid respects to Liberation War martyrs at the National Memorial in Savar, arriving in a secured bus late at night. He had just returned to Bangladesh after seventeen years of exile in London, drawing a large crowd of party supporters to the site. Security forces, including police, detectives, RAB, and BGB, were deployed along the Dhaka-Aricha Highway and around the memorial for his protection.
Because he arrived after sunset, a delegation of senior BNP leaders placed wreaths at the altar on his behalf earlier in the evening. Before heading to Savar, Tarique Rahman's convoy first stopped at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar mausoleum in the capital. There he prayed at the grave of his father, former president Ziaur Rahman.
