Teen deepfake sex crimes see a tenfold increase

National Police Agency statistics reveal alarming trends among adolescent offenders committing technology-based sexual violations. The number of teenagers charged with illegal recording and deepfake-related offenses increased from 710 cases in 2020 to 1,372 by 2024. Deepfake violations alone surged from 52 incidents during 2022 to 548 cases two years later. Nearly 80 percent of deepfake perpetrators fall within the teenage demographic. The first eight months of 2024 already produced 556 teen suspects.

Educational surveys expose concerning attitudes among young people regarding digital crimes. Middle school participants labeled deepfake creation as harmless pranks at rates exceeding 62 percent. High school students shared similar misconceptions at a 47 percent rate. Representative Kang Kyung-sook emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive digital crime education programs. While overall teenage sexual offenses peaked during 2022 before declining slightly, technology-assisted violations continue escalating rapidly.
