Teesta floods hit Lalmonirhat as the river tops the danger mark, and all gates open

Heavy rainfall and upstream water flow forced officials to open every sluice gate at Teesta Barrage on Monday morning. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre recorded water levels at 52.18 centimeters, surpassing the danger threshold by three centimeters at Dalia Point. Forecasters predict continued rising waters over the next day, threatening low-lying areas across five northern districts. Multiple unions in Lalmonirhat already face inundation as floodwaters spread through char lands and riverside communities. Officials have issued alerts to residents living near the riverbank.

Farmers express deep concern about additional crop destruction after losing harvests three times during the August flooding. Many agricultural workers recently planted new Aman rice seedlings following previous flood damage to their early-season crops. Water Development Board engineers monitor the rapidly changing situation while advising communities to maintain vigilance. The flooding affects Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari, and Gaibandha districts as water levels continue climbing. Emergency management teams coordinate response efforts across multiple affected upazilas.
