Tengku Maimun Reflects on Legacy in New Book Behind the Gavel

Malaysia's first female top judge stepped into the spotlight yesterday to present her memoir to the public. Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat retired from her role as Chief Justice and marked the occasion with a book launch at the Asian International Arbitration Centre. The former judge admitted she still cannot believe anyone would want to read about her six years leading the country's highest court. She expressed hope that her time as Chief Justice proved she served her nation well and protected the rule of law. The retired judge told the audience that her work was complete.

The heavy responsibility of maintaining judicial independence has passed to others according to Tengku Maimun. She made clear that Malaysia's government and the next Chief Justice must step up to protect the courts from outside pressure. The former top judge stressed that citizens will be watching closely to see how leaders handle this crucial task. She repeated concerns about judicial integrity that she raised many times during her career. The public expects strong leadership from both political and legal authorities.

Singapore's Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon attended the special event along with other prominent legal figures. The massive book spans nearly 800 pages and offers readers three different sections. Personal stories from colleagues and friends fill the first part of the publication. The second section features important court decisions that Tengku Maimun wrote during her career. Her most memorable speeches from her time as Chief Justice make up the final portion.
