Thima Ahmed, Jomvu women build new lives from Tudor Creek trees

The Bidii Creek Conservancy operates along Tudor Creek in Jomvu, where historical Christian and Muslim communities unite through environmental restoration. This community organization emerged from a 2009 youth initiative and became formalized in 2013. The Kenya Pipeline Company Foundation partnered with the group in 2021 to restore degraded mangrove forests. Community members have established extensive seedling nurseries that supply restoration projects throughout the region.

The conservancy has planted approximately 800,000 mangrove trees across 50 hectares of Tudor Creek. Each seedling costs 100 shillings and provides direct income to local families through nursery management and planting activities. Members have used earnings to construct homes, purchase motorcycles, and fund children's education. The organization manages 160 beehives within the mangrove forests, generating additional revenue through honey production.

Kenya has lost over 40 percent of its mangrove coverage, making restoration efforts essential for coastal protection. The government targets complete mangrove restoration by 2027 through the Integrated Mangrove Ecosystem Management Plan.
