Tinubu Makes Ogoni Nine Heroes Immortal

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gave special awards to Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other activists who died fighting for their rights. The president honored these heroes during Democracy Day celebrations on Thursday. He also awarded Kudirat Abiola, Bola Ige, and former President Shehu Musa Yar'Adua after their deaths. Many other democracy fighters received recognition for their brave work. These awards help heal old wounds from Nigeria's difficult past.

The military government of Sani Abacha killed Saro-Wiwa and his friends back in 1995. They accused the activists of murder but many people believed this was wrong. The other eight men who died were Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine. All nine men fought for the rights of Ogoni people against oil companies. Their deaths made people around the world very angry at Nigeria's military rulers.

Professor Wole Soyinka received the highest living award for his writing and activism. Many journalists, lawyers, and political leaders also got honors for standing up to military rule. The president promised last November to fix historical problems between different groups. These awards show Nigeria wants to remember people who suffered for democracy and freedom.
