Tinubu Warns West Africa Democracy Could Collapse

Nigeria's leader, Bola Tinubu, said extremist violence threatens West African democracy. He spoke on Tuesday at a celebration marking 50 years of ECOWAS in Ghana. Tinubu asked member countries to work together against these problems. He pointed to military takeovers as major concerns for the region. Climate issues also worry regional leaders because they harm food supplies.

Presidents John Mahama and former leader Nana Akufo-Addo joined other officials at the Accra event. The Nigerian president serves as chairman of the 15-nation group. ECOWAS aims to build a single market across West Africa. The organization wants better living standards through teamwork among nations. Regional troubles have grown worse in recent years.

Armed groups keep attacking communities across several countries. Some military officers seized power from elected governments. These actions hurt progress toward democratic rule. Weather changes make farming harder for local people. Tinubu believes only united action can solve these challenges.

ECOWAS focuses on economic growth and trade between members. The group also helps build roads and power systems. Peacekeeping ranks high among its duties. Most importantly, ECOWAS tries to stop conflicts before they start. Tinubu called on all members to remember their shared goals.
