Tour du Rwanda Returns With Grit and Glamour

The exciting bicycle race called Tour du Rwanda is back! It all starts this Sunday, February 23rd, with a short 4-kilometer race against the clock. The cyclists will begin at the Kigali BK Arena and pedal as fast as they can to the finish line at Amahoro Stadium.

This year's Tour du Rwanda is extra special because it happens just before the big UCI World Road Championships in September. To keep everyone safe during the first stage of the race, the Rwanda National Police will close some roads from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. These roads go from BK Arena to Amahoro Stadium.

Rwanda's national cycling team will compete with 14 other teams in this year's challenging race. Moise Mugisha, a star rider from Team Rwanda, is excited to participate in the Tour du Rwanda for the seventh time. He is the only Rwandan cyclist who has won a stage in this important event before. Last time, he had to stop racing because he was very tired.

Moise Mugisha feels stronger and happier now. On Saturday, he told reporters that he and his team had trained well and were ready to do their best. He asked everyone to come and cheer for Team Rwanda.

Some other top cyclists are coming back to the Tour du Rwanda this year. Henok Mulubrhan, who won the race in 2023, will be there. Metkel Eyob and Itamar Einhorn, who have both won stages before, will also compete.

The cyclists will race over 812 kilometers in eight stages. The longest stage, from Rukomo to Kayonza, is 158 kilometers. Rwanda has many mountains, which makes the race even harder. The weather can also change quickly. Rwandan cyclists usually do very well on the mountain stages, especially the ones from Kigali to Musanze and from Musanze to Rubavu.

The riders will need to be very fit and strong, particularly during the back-to-back hard stages like Rusizi to Huye and Nyanza to Canal Olympia. It will be an exciting week of racing as the cyclists push themselves to the limit on the beautiful but challenging roads of Rwanda.
