TPLF Rift Splits Tigray and Stirs Up Trouble

Tigray is a mountain region in northern Ethiopia with a rich history. The area gave birth to the ancient Aksumite civilization, featuring landmarks like Aksum obelisks. Northeast lies Adwa, where Ethiopian forces defeated Italian troops in 1896. This northernmost Ethiopian state borders both Eritrea and Sudan, making it key in regional politics.

The region holds economic promise through mineral wealth. It once provided 2,600kg of gold yearly to Ethiopia's central bank, creating $100 million in export money. Beyond gold, Tigray contains gemstones, copper, granite, and petroleum resources waiting for development.

A civil war from 2020-2022 between Tigrayan forces, the Ethiopian government, and Eritrean troops killed about 600,000 people. The conflict displaced millions and caused many human rights violations. The Pretoria Agreement, signed in 2022, aimed to end the fighting.

Political problems inside the Tigray People's Liberation Front created a new crisis. Last month, leaders removed interim administrator Getachew Reda, showing deep splits in the party. Getachew claims he remains in charge from abroad despite the coup attempt.

He plans to return to Ethiopia soon but worries about his safety in Tigray. During an interview in Dubai, where he receives medical care, Getachew discussed his removal, power struggles, and why leadership change remains important for the region.
