Trump declares Gaza war over, forgets to tell Hamas

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he believes agreement on a Gaza peace proposal remains within reach despite waiting for Hamas to accept the terms. The administration released a 20-point framework on Monday that would establish temporary governance while requiring Israel to avoid annexation and forced displacement of residents. Trump told military officers in Virginia that Arab and Muslim nations have endorsed the arrangement alongside Israeli approval.

The president warned that Hamas has three to four days to respond before consequences follow. He told reporters the agreement demands immediate hostage releases within 72 hours of acceptance and behavioral changes from the militant group. Trump suggested he would permit Israeli military action if Hamas rejects the proposal after approximately 25,000 fighters died since the conflict began following the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that killed 1,200 people and captured 251 hostages.

Roughly 48 captives remain in Gaza, with about 20 believed alive. The White House seeks to end the nearly two-year conflict through diplomatic channels before resorting to escalated military operations. Trump described the regional consensus as unprecedented and expressed hope for lasting stability in the Middle East.
