Trump eyes moving marijuana to Schedule III, research could boom

President Donald Trump is reportedly preparing an executive order to reschedule marijuana. The directive would instruct federal agencies to move cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III. This shift would not legalize the drug nationally but would recognize a lower abuse potential.

The change could significantly reduce restrictions on scientific cannabis research. It might also affect federal prosecution priorities and ease banking access for state legal pot businesses. Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton expressed caution, stating he would review the actual order before judging.

Cotton highlighted the increased potency of modern marijuana compared to past decades. He claimed most Arkansas voters support decriminalization or medical use but oppose full commercial legalization. The rescheduling order could influence both medical access and ongoing national policy debates if enacted.
