Trump-Kim APEC meet teased as nuclear tensions linger

South Korean foreign ministry officials suggest Washington and Pyongyang might hold discussions during the upcoming APEC summit. The October gathering in Gyeongju presents an opportunity for diplomatic contact after years of stalled relations. Official sources declined to specify potential meeting formats or locations. Both Trump and Kim Jong Un plan to attend the regional economic forum.

Relations between the nations remain strained since the failed 2019 Hanoi summit over nuclear disarmament terms. Kim recently expressed openness to renewed dialogue while maintaining his nuclear weapons program. The North Korean leader appeared with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin at a Beijing military parade this month. Analysts believe Kim enters potential talks with greater influence due to strengthened ties with Moscow and Beijing.
