Trump tariff bombshell hits Philippines, Sri Lanka as trade wars escalate

Trump fired off another round of tariff threats Wednesday, targeting seven more nations with punishing trade penalties. The commander-in-chief delivered his latest economic ultimatum to Philippines, Sri Lanka, Brunei, Algeria, Libya, Iraq and Moldova leaders. Each country faces duties between 20 and 30 percent starting August 1 unless they cave to American demands. The White House strongman tweaked some rates from his April announcement while keeping others exactly the same. Sri Lanka caught a break with tariffs sliding from 44 percent down to 30 percent.

Iraq also saw relief as their penalty dropped from 39 percent to 30 percent on the updated hit list. Philippines got hammered harder with rates climbing from 17 percent up to 20 percent compared to earlier warnings. Trump claims he picked these numbers using common sense while eyeing trade deficit figures that anger him. The president promised more letters would arrive later that day, including one for Brazil. His administration has already sent similar warnings to over 20 nations across the globe.

Each letter follows an identical template demanding countries move their factories to American soil or face punishment. Trump threatens even steeper penalties if foreign leaders dare to fight back against his trade war tactics. Major allies like Japan and South Korea have already received their marching orders alongside developing nations. The August deadline gives countries just weeks to decide whether they will surrender to American trade demands.
