Uganda jails officer for backing opposition ahead of 2026 polls

Getting fired over a Facebook post is peak Uganda prisons drama. A warder named Lawrence Ampe was just dismissed for backing the opposition. The Prisons Council canned him for openly campaigning against the government on social media.

Ampe used his online platforms to support National Unity Platform leader Bobi Wine. He posted accusations about corruption and abuse by senior officials. His activity violated strict rules requiring political neutrality for service members.

The internal memo ordered his immediate removal last December. Authorities were told to secure all government property from him. This warning shoots across the bow as the country nears general elections.

Security agencies constantly remind personnel to avoid partisan actions. Ampe ignored that by attending a Bobi Wine rally in Ngora District. He also endorsed the NUP's Break Silence mobilization campaign.

His dismissal serves as a public example to other officers. The Prisons Council resolution was marked urgent and important. It reinforces that political activity remains a forbidden risk for civil servants.

The move highlights tensions before the upcoming national vote. It shows the state's low tolerance for dissent within its own ranks. Another uniformed person just learned that lesson the hard way.
