Uganda military, EC at odds over candidate security

Uganda's Special Forces Command will protect all presidential candidates during the 2026 election campaign. Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi announced that nominations will occur on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. The military maintains that presidential aspirants qualify as Very Important Persons requiring specialized security. Defence Forces spokesman Major General Felix Kulayigye emphasized that VIP protection falls under military jurisdiction. Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba previously declared exclusive military oversight for candidate security.

Presidential hopeful Elton Joseph Mabirizi refuses military protection and demands police guards instead. The candidate argues that legal provisions allow personal security choices. Previous elections utilized police Very Important Persons Protection Units rather than military forces. Electoral Commission officials insist no conflict exists between agencies. Article 212 mandates police security during electoral periods, according to commission representatives.
