Uganda has won the Best Stand Award at a major tourism expo in India, marking a significant milestone for the East African nation's tourism sector.
The award ceremony took place at the Indo-Asia Tourism Expo, held from January 30 to February 1, 2025. Uganda's High Commissioner to India, Joyce Kakuramatsi Kikafunda, accepted the honor from Fair Fest Media Ltd CEO Sanjav Agarwal.
Nine Ugandan tourism companies showcased the country's attractions at the event. Their display earned top ratings from both inbound and outbound tourism buyers. Judges based their decision on visitor feedback and stand presentation.
The Ugandan pavilion highlighted diverse tourism offerings, including gorilla tracking, bird watching, cultural heritage sites, and safari experiences. The country boasts over 1,200 bird species, freshwater lakes, and adventure tourism options.
Uganda's High Commission partnered with key organizations for this showcase, including Uganda Airlines, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Tourism Ministry, the Uganda Tourism Board, the Wildlife Authority, and tour operators.
Plans are underway to bring Indian tour operators to Uganda within two months. This visit aims to give them a first-hand experience of tourist attractions. The tourism board plans to match these visitors with local operators who can represent Uganda in India.
The initiative targets India's vast tourism market of 19.5 million potential travelers. Indian film producer Ramji has agreed to create a movie featuring Uganda's scenic spots. This film could reach 50 million viewers across India and Asia.
Uganda Airlines' direct flights between Entebbe and Mumbai, launched in October 2023, have made travel easier. The service operates three times weekly, supporting tourism and trade growth.
The success of this expo aligns with Uganda's economic goals. The country aims to grow its economy to $500 billion in 15 years, with tourism playing a key role. The government earned praise for supporting overseas missions in tourism promotion efforts.
The High Commission plans to engage Indian travel magazines and Bollywood celebrities. These influencers, with their large social media followings, could help attract more visitors to Uganda.
