Ugandan Journalists Advised to Frame Tourism Positively

Media professionals in Uganda received guidance about tourism coverage at a recent breakfast meeting held by the Association of Uganda Tour Operators in Kampala. Representatives encouraged journalists to consider broader impacts when reporting incidents related to tourism. Dr. Ivan Lukanda from Makerere University explained that media significantly shapes public understanding of tourism. He emphasized the importance of accurate reporting that portrays the country positively rather than focusing exclusively on negative aspects.

The discussion referenced recent events, including tourist fatalities near Queen Elizabeth National Park and an Ebola outbreak. Speakers highlighted the need for balanced coverage that addresses legitimate concerns without causing unnecessary harm to the tourism industry. Dr. Gessa Simplicious, public relations officer at the Uganda Tourism Board, noted that public perception depends heavily on media framing. He advised that factual reporting can be presented constructively to support national development goals.

Uganda Wildlife Authority spokesperson Bashir Hangi stressed patriotism in journalism practices. He reminded attendees that citizens share responsibility for their homeland and suggested media professionals should help people understand tourism benefits. Hangi encouraged reporting beyond obvious stories to highlight underdeveloped tourism products and amplify community voices. This approach could strengthen community-based tourism initiatives throughout Uganda.

Ministry of Health spokesperson Emmanuel Ainebyoona addressed challenges in balancing public safety information with economic considerations. He suggested contextual framing makes a substantial difference in how stories affect tourism. Ainebyoona also mentioned government agencies must carefully package information released to media channels. Dennis Ntege, AUTO General Secretary, reinforced the importance of national interests in reporting decisions and announced plans for additional journalist training sessions aimed at tourism sector development.
