Uhuru blasts neglect of housing pioneers

At a memorial service on Friday, former President Uhuru Kenyatta said that many who laid the intellectual foundation for Kenya’s affordable housing program have not been acknowledged. He paid tribute to Frank Ireri, former chief executive of Housing Finance Group, who died Oct. 26 at age 63 after a battle with cancer.

Ireri is credited with reshaping the mortgage market to serve lower-income earners, chairing the board of Habitat for Humanity Kenya, and serving as a nonexecutive director at Centum Real Estate. He also helped reverse losses at Kenya Pipeline Company as a board member, transforming it into a revenue contributor.

Kenya’s affordable housing initiative, a key project of the Kenya Kwanza administration, seeks to expand access to low-cost homes through partnerships among government, developers and buyers. It offers incentives for builders and access to mortgages or rent-to-own arrangements for eligible households.
