UN deputy says Africa must walk the talk

According to UN Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed, Africa needs action instead of just talk. She spoke at the Africa Regional Forum meeting about opportunities facing the continent. With only five years left to reach UN development goals, African countries must step up. The UN leader praised Africa's leadership and innovation across many areas. Despite challenges, she believes Africa stands at a moment filled with massive possibilities.

Mohammed pointed out that Africa had nine of the world's fastest-growing economies last year despite global problems. She highlighted progress against HIV/AIDS as proof that things improve. Zimbabwe reached important targets, with 98 percent of people knowing their status. But debt weighs down many African nations badly. Twenty-five countries paid more for debt than health and education combined during 2023. This situation stops essential investments everywhere across the continent.

Over half of government cash goes to debt payments in numerous places. Mohammed called this completely unacceptable since 60 percent of countries risk debt trouble. However, she emphasized these negative statistics do not define what Africa truly represents. The continent continues moving forward despite these obstacles.
