UN Flees Goma as M23 Rebels Tighten Grip

The UN will move some staff out of Goma, DRC. The city is the capital of North Kivu province. Rebels are advancing in the area. This has made the security situation worse.

The UN said on Saturday that non-essential workers will leave Goma for now. This includes staff who can do their jobs remotely. The UN will still help people in North Kivu. It will provide food, medical care, and shelter. It will also protect vulnerable groups.

Essential UN staff will stay in Goma to maintain critical operations. The UN will review the temporary relocation as circumstances change.

People in Goma are afraid. The M23 rebels took over Sake, a nearby town. In 2012, they controlled Goma for 10 days. Foreign embassies have warned their citizens to leave North Kivu. Airports and borders are still open.

The Congolese army is trying to retake Sake. Army spokesperson Guillaume Njike Kaiko said on Friday that they had stopped the rebels from moving toward Goma. He told people to stay calm. Kaiko said the army is working to restore order.

UN chief Antonio Guterres is very worried about the renewed fighting. On Thursday, his spokesperson said Guterres condemns M23's attacks. The rebels have expanded into North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. This has killed many civilians. It could also lead to a bigger regional conflict.

Guterres wants M23 to stop fighting immediately. He said the group should leave all areas it has taken over and respect the ceasefire agreement from last August.

The fighting in eastern DRC has gotten worse. Battles between the army and armed groups have forced over 400,000 people to flee their homes since the start of 2025.
