M23 Rebels Bail on Doha Peace Talks Conflict Brewing

M23 rebels pulled out of peace talks that were happening in Doha. Qatar's leader helped both sides try to make a deal since April. The rebels agreed to stop fighting and leave some towns they controlled. They wanted Congo to free 700 prisoners who support their cause.

Congo only released five people who were not on the rebel list. M23 leaders Benjamin Mbonimpa and Colonel John Imani Nzenze led the talks but left after demands stayed different. Government soldiers kept attacking rebel areas and civilian zones during the supposed ceasefire. The rebels say Congo does not really want peace through talking.

Army forces also attacked the Banyamulenge people in South Kivu province instead of stopping violence. M23 spokesperson Kanyuka said senior commanders ordered the delegation home because of continued fighting. Congo has not made any public statement about rebels leaving the talks. Nobody knows if fighting will start again between the two armies.

M23 controls most areas in North and South Kivu provinces right after pulling out. They hold Goma and Bukavu cities along with both major airports. The peace process faces major problems without rebel participation.
