UN hears about Bangladesh's Chittagong killing fields

Human rights groups have condemned violence against indigenous communities in Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill Tracts after security forces killed three people during protests over a gang rape. The unrest began on September 23 when demonstrators demanded justice for a Marma schoolgirl and faced gunfire from Bangladeshi troops. Rights advocates documented 637 mob killings, attacks on 878 journalists and 2,485 incidents targeting religious minorities across Bangladesh in the past year.

The International Forum for Secular Bangladesh displayed evidence of minority persecution outside United Nations offices in Geneva during the Human Rights Council session. Muhammad Yunus dismissed all members of the National Human Rights Commission in November 2024, following the agency's report on rising violence. UN officials called for independent investigations into attacks on Hindu and Christian populations while monitoring forced conversions and the displacement of indigenous groups.
