UNIMA's Kalulu takes Malawi AI spotlight at Miss Geek Africa

Shyreen Kalulu, a 20-year-old computer science student at the University of Malawi, will represent the nation at Miss Geek Africa 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda, from Oct. 12 to 21. The final-year undergraduate secured her place after judges at the national competition praised her artificial intelligence-powered innovation called the Automated Maternal Intelligence and Notification Assistant, or AMINA. The health assistant provides pregnant women and new mothers with automated reminders, medical guidance, and emergency notifications to improve maternal care outcomes.

The continental competition gathers young women between the ages of 13 and 21 to showcase technology solutions addressing African challenges. Smart Africa and the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority organized the national selection process to encourage digital innovation among youth. The 2025 event takes place under the Transform Africa Summit theme AI for Africa: Innovate Locally, Impact Globally. Kalulu said she hopes to inspire other young women to pursue technological careers and demonstrate how innovation can transform communities.
