University of Zimbabwe Lecturers March Over Meager Pay

Zimbabwe university teachers walked out over pay, saying their $230 monthly salaries fall short. They stopped grading exams at the University of Zimbabwe, leaving students waiting for results. The strike started outside the main campus with demands for wages that match their skills.

Judge Benjamin Chikowore backed the teachers in court, upholding their right to protest. His ruling protects their peaceful marches and poster displays on campus grounds. Police had arrested three lecturers early in the protests, but the court ordered their release. The judge also set rules for demonstrations, creating specific protest zones near campus entrances.

Lawyer Munyaradzi Gwisai called the decision important for worker rights across Zimbabwe. The teachers must appoint people to talk with police during protests, and they need marshals to keep order among demonstrators. The court case happened after brief detentions of union leaders on minor charges.

The dispute shows growing problems in Zimbabwe's education as teachers struggle with living costs. Many experts think this fight might change how other workers bargain for better pay throughout the country.
