UNMC gets Gerald Banaga Baingi as boss

Uganda just named Dr. Gerald Banaga-Baingi the new boss of its national mining company. He starts his job on May 1 next year. The company board made this official yesterday morning through its chairman, James Mukasa Sebugenyi. Dr. Banaga-Baingi brings two decades of know-how from working with energy, minerals, and economic planning.

He previously worked at high levels for Uganda's energy ministry. He helped create new rules, mineral deals, and policy updates with big groups like the International Energy Agency. People respect him for improving Uganda's mining sector, especially how the country handles its mineral resources, evaluates what it has, and makes deals with investors.

The board picked him as part of their plan to help Uganda make the most money from its minerals for years to come. He earned his PhD in Economics from Makerere University. He also studied at the University of Dundee in the UK, where he got a Master's degree in petroleum energy economics. He also has extra training from Norway in petroleum policy.

Dr. Banaga-Baingi also holds an MBA from Hong Kong University and studied economics at Makerere for his Bachelor's degree. The Uganda National Mining Company started up in 2022. Its job is to run the government's business interests in mining and look after Uganda's shares in joint mining projects. They aim to help Uganda get the highest value from its minerals through smart partnerships and sustainable mining practices.
