US-Europe rift over Ukraine clouds G20 summit in South Africa

Transatlantic divisions over Ukraine's future threaten to dominate G20 proceedings in Johannesburg despite the American presidential absence from the gathering of economic powerhouses. President Donald Trump skipped the summit after declaring South African priorities incompatible with Washington policies, though his administration released a unilateral Ukraine peace proposal aligned with Russian objectives that prompted urgent consultations among European capitals.

French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that any settlement requires collective European and NATO endorsement following discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced sidebar consultations to reinforce the principle that Ukrainian participation remains essential for any diplomatic framework.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed confidence that member states would endorse priorities addressing economic disparities, debt burdens and clean energy transitions despite American objections to issuing joint declarations. The forum represents 85 percent of global economic output.
