US Might Make Nvidia Chips Spy on You

US lawmakers have proposed a new law called the Chip Security Act regarding NVIDIA AI chips going to China. The act would require NVIDIA to add location tracking to its AI chips to monitor who uses them. Rep. Bill Foster, a former physicist, leads this effort because he believes NVIDIA can modify chips to stay away from Chinese buyers. He suggests NVIDIA add features to disable chips if they appear in China. Chinese companies currently buy these powerful chips through countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines.

The US government tried to stop this trade but failed as Chinese firms found ways around the rules. US officials view AI technology as important for national security against foreign rivals. Countries with good relations with both the US and China might help transfer this technology indirectly. The law might force NVIDIA to create new safeguards for its products sold worldwide. People wonder if this act will become law and what changes NVIDIA will need to make. The outcome remains unclear as lawmakers debate this technology control measure.
