US Tariff Blow Threatens 50K Kenya Textile Jobs

More than 50,000 textile workers could lose their jobs after the United States imposed new taxes on East African products. Principal Secretary Regina Ombam warned Parliament members about the 10 percent tariff during a committee meeting. President Trump announced the reciprocal trade policy on April 2, targeting countries that tax American goods. The government suspended the tariffs for 90 days starting April 10, but they return on July 9. Kenya's major exports, such as clothing, coffee, and flowers, will be more expensive for American buyers.

The textile industry benefits from duty-free access through the African Growth and Opportunity Act. Ombam said these jobs face danger if the tariffs take effect as planned. The fish, coffee, and essential oil sectors also risk losing business due to higher prices. East African Community exports to the United States reached $1.3 billion during the 2022-2023 financial year. Government officials plan to meet with regional partners and possibly request assistance from the African Union in combating the new trade rules.
