Trump whacks pharma with 100 percent US tariff threat

President Trump announced tariffs reaching 100 percent on branded and patented pharmaceutical imports beginning October 1, 2025. Companies constructing manufacturing facilities in America will receive exemptions from these trade penalties. The president also imposed duties on various other products through his Truth Social platform. Trump justified these measures as necessary for national security purposes.

India faces potential economic consequences as America represents its largest pharmaceutical export destination. Indian companies exported 8.7 billion dollars worth of medicines to America during the previous fiscal year. Major firms like Dr Reddy's and Sun Pharma derive substantial portions of their revenue from American markets. India supplies nearly half of all generic medications consumed by American patients.

Higher tariffs will likely increase medication costs for American consumers and create supply shortages. Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers may struggle to absorb additional expenses given their narrow profit margins.
